(ANSA) – ROME, 08 SEPTEMBER – A large fire hit the exclusion zone of the former Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine yesterday, where firefighters are still working to put out the flames that have already destroyed over 2,600 hectares of forest, according to Ukrainian media. So far, the level of radioactivity has remained at normal levels, reports Ukrainska Pravda, citing the Ukrainian Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources. As of yesterday evening, 900 hectares of vegetation had gone up in smoke in the Korohod forest, 915 in the Denysovychi forest, 250 in the Paryshiv forest and another 550 hectares in the Lubianka forest. Only the fires in Lubianka and Korohod are under control. The area in the Paryshiv forest is partially mined, which is why the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ bomb disposal team was called in, but the presence of explosive devices in the area makes firefighters’ operations more difficult. “The situation is under control and there is no threat to critical infrastructure such as the central spent fuel storage facility, the Vector production complex or the Buriakivka radioactive waste disposal facility. The radiation level is normal,” the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources assured. (ANSA).
