The flames were fanned by strong hurricane winds. Hundreds of buildings were destroyed, some of them burned to the ground.
The island is a popular tourist destination and visitors have been urged to either go home or stay away from the site for the time being.

Thousands of people were forced from their homes, and a state of emergency was declared.
A massive search and rescue operation is underway, with some people still missing.
The fires prompted some people to jump into the city’s harbor to escape the flames and smoke. And 14 individuals were rescued at sea, officials said.
On Wednesday (9/8), the strong winds caused by the passage of Hurricane Dora eased slightly.
This gave the pilots an aerial view of the full scale of the damage.
