Mukono:

A boarding school for blind students is operating in Mukono District, located in the eastern part of Kampala, the capital of Uganda. A fire broke out in a student hostel here on Tuesday morning. District security chief Fatima Indipasa said that 21 female students were staying in the hostel at that time.

He mentioned that 11 female students died in the fire and 6 were hospitalized with serious injuries. He also said that only 3 people survived. The dead blind students were burnt beyond recognition and DNA was used to identify them. He also mentioned that he is going to conduct an investigation.

When the fire broke out, the headmaster of the school, Francis Grube, was sleeping in a room next to the girls’ dormitory. Minister Helen Grace Asamo has said that the windows in the hostel were made so strong that they could not be opened, so the students could not escape from the fire and died.
