Fire in the Campobello di Mazara slum: a laborer died. 50 block the road: “We want decent accommodation”

A fire broke out inside the migrant camp in the former Selinunte concrete, not far from Castelvetrano, in the Trapani area. A man of sub-Saharan origin was found dead by firefighters. According to the first reconstructions, the fire broke out due to accidental causes in the evening hours of 29 September. The former Calcestruzzi has long been abandoned and has been occupied for years by the migrants they reach Campobello di Mazara for the olive harvest. Already for the new collection campaign they had set up makeshift tents and lodgings of cardboard, asbestos and wood. Most destroyed by fire. Many managed to escape to safety, getting out in time before the flames enveloped the entire area of ​​the structure, about three thousand square meters. They poured into the street, where they spent the night. The fire also damaged some neighboring warehouses, which had long been abandoned. 50 have fled and are blocking provincial road 56 between Campobello di Mazara and Selinunte in protest. The migrants have placed wooden platforms and nets in the center of the roadway. “We ask for a decent accommodation – the protesters say – they must understand that we are a value because without us they could not pick the olives. We are all brothers, both those with a residence permit and those without ”, they stressed. Carabinieri, State Police and Municipal Police on site.

The former Calcestruzzi Selinunte is owned by Onofrio Cascio. Since 2010 he has abandoned it, closing the gates, and has filed several complaints with the police for violation of private property. However, the camp was never cleared. The migrants managed themselves: in the structure there was a bazaar, the area where the water needed for showers was heated with the fire and the area where the meat was slaughtered.
