The State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) agency LETA informs that the site of the event is still being monitored for the pile covered with gravel, because until the temperature has dropped to the level where re-ignition is not possible, there is a danger that the burning may re-occur if oxygen is introduced .

LETA has already reported that on August 7 at 1:53 p.m., VUGD received a call about a fire in Riga, Ganibi dam. Several hangars, products and equipment in a total area of 1,550 square meters had caught fire. A strong smog had formed in the area.

The hangars contained titanium shavings, which are not recommended to be extinguished with water, so they were covered with sand, preventing oxygen supply and open burning.

40 firefighters with eight tankers, two ladder trucks, as well as a hose and foam specialized vehicle fought the flames. Municipal companies with heavy equipment were also working at the scene. The fire was localized on Wednesday at 18.36. After that, VUGD started observing the territory and monitoring the covered piles with thermal cameras and unmanned aerial vehicles.

The mentioned object is managed by SIA “LLR-Ecotech”. Company representatives told LETA agency that the burning hangar was used as a scrap metal warehouse. It is not clear why the fire broke out, but the hangar is said to have burned down almost completely.
