On the 9th, President Yoon Seok-yeol publicly apologized for the first time in person for the suspicion of first lady Kim Kun-hee receiving luxury bags. However, he hinted at exercising his right to veto (the right to request reconsideration) regarding the special prosecution law requested by the opposition party, calling it a “political offensive.”
At the ‘Public Report and Press Conference for the 2nd Year of the Yoon Seok-yeol Administration’ held in the briefing room of the Yongsan Presidential Office this morning, President Yoon said that it was inappropriate to mention the ongoing prosecution investigation into Mrs. “We apologize for causing concern to the public,” he said.
President Yoon said, “A special prosecution is something that is conducted when there are suspicions that the investigation by designated prosecutors, police, or the Corruption Investigation Agency has been neglected or inadequate.”
President Yoon said, “The issue of the special prosecution regarding the Deutsche Motors (stock price manipulation) case was in fact targeted at me for about two and a half years by the last government, and the prosecution mobilized the special department to conduct an intense investigation.” “I can’t help but ask whether it was an investigation that was done for the sake of it, or whether it was done poorly while investigating.”
President Yoon said, “I have the opinion that saying we have done enough and are doing it again is truly a political offensive and political act that does not fit the essence or purpose of the special prosecution, and is not intended to conceal the truth.”
Regarding the Special Prosecutor Chae Sang-byeong Act, which was passed through the plenary session of the National Assembly under the leadership of the Democratic Party of Korea, President Yoon expressed his intention to veto the Special Prosecution Act, saying, “A thorough investigation of the truth must be conducted to prevent recurrence of such incidents, restore the honor of the victims, and determine who is responsible.”
President Yoon said, “I will closely watch the progress (of the investigation) and once all procedures are completed, the investigative authorities will explain the progress and results of the investigation to the public in detail.” “If they say no, then I will be the first to argue for a special investigation,” he emphasized.
Regarding the departure of former Australian Ambassador Lee Jong-seop, a suspect in the external pressure case investigating Chae Sang-byeong, President Yoon said, “Even the government agency that verifies personnel has no idea about the ban on leaving the country,” and added, “It is also true that the Corruption Investigation Office reported (former Ambassador Lee) around September. “I found out after reading the article that if a summons to the Corruption Investigation Office had been made, we would have reviewed it as well,” he said.
Regarding cooperation with the opposition party, President Yoon said, “I don’t think that just because I met Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung, the atmosphere will change overnight and cooperation will not be possible.” “I think that cooperation is what we live by,” he said. “I think it is important to have the attitude of never giving up on this cooperation.”
Regarding his defeat in the general election, President Yoon said, “No matter how hard I tried to improve the lives of the people, there was a lack of change that the people could feel,” and “There was a lot of lack of explanation and communication of the government’s policies to the people.”
President Yoon explained, “I think it is the economy that will ultimately be important in the future,” and “While corporate growth and job creation are important, it is important to more actively seek out and resolve the inconveniences that each and every citizen feels in their daily lives.”
