Gearbox Software has revealed the first gameplay footage for borderlands 4 as part of a brand-new trailer shown at The game Awards 2024.
Following on from Borderlands 4’s initial reveal at Gamescom, the new trailer offered fans a glimpse of what to expect from the hotly anticipated sequel. Among other things, it showed snippets of first-person shooting and a few returning characters, including Claptrap.
Here’s the official blurb from Gearbox:

Borderlands 4 is the most ambitious Borderlands to date, lovingly hand-crafted by the advancement studio that first forged the looter shooter genre. The title evolves the series’ gameplay and storytelling in new ways while delivering on the quintessential Borderlands experience fans know and love, including:
Intense action, badass Vault Hunters, and billions of wild and deadly weapons on an all-new planet ruled by a ruthless tyrant.
The deepest and most diverse Vault Hunter skill trees of any Borderlands title yet, giving players an unprecedented level of expression through their builds. Paired with the most expansive loot chase yet, players will have all the tools they need to seek out and perfect the build that best matches their style.
Players will be able to seamlessly travel between zones and become immersed in a more dynamic world featuring events and discoverable side missions that encourage and reward exploration.
New traversal mechanics add to the exploration for loot and add new dimensions to combat. A vehicle that can be summoned almost anywhere will have players racing across the lovely vistas of Kairos in style.
Fight solo or in co-op with up to three other players in this immense sci-fi adventure, packed with free-form combat and exploration, pulse-pounding boss fights, infinitely varied loot drops, and an eclectic cast of unforgettable characters new and old.
“Borderlands 4 is about freedom and being badass,” said Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford. “This is by far the biggest and most insane world we’ve ever made - it’s overloaded with jerkface ratnozzle scrote monsters that need to be put down with the most over-the-top hardcore nuts op guns and loot in any game ever. Oh, and the story also seriously kicks ass!”
Pitchford heavily teased the trailer in the run-up to The Game Awards, promising that it would include a “never-been-seen original cinematic sequence depicting a moment that occurs about halfway between the end of Borderlands 3 and the beginning of Borderlands 4.”
Borderlands 4 is the latest entry in the popular looter series that first debuted back in 2009. Known for its humor, customization, and huge number of guns, the Borderlands series has spanned numerous entries and spin-offs and also one poorly received feature film.

Jason Lee: Thanks for having me! It’s an exciting time for Borderlands fans.
Time.news Editor: Absolutely! The trailer has stirred a lot of excitement. Can you share yoru thoughts on the new gameplay footage? What stood out to you the most?
Jason Lee: The gameplay footage showcased a fantastic blend of familiar mechanics and fresh elements that are characteristic of the Borderlands series. The first-person shooting sequences looked smooth and dynamic, which is crucial for a title in this genre. The graphics have also seen a notable upgrade, making the colorful and chaotic aesthetic of Pandora even more vibrant.
Time.news Editor: That’s great to hear! Fans were especially thrilled to see some returning characters in the trailer. how crucial do you think nostalgia plays in the success of a sequel like Borderlands 4?
Jason Lee: Nostalgia certainly plays a critically important role! It creates a emotional connection to the franchise that can draw in both long-time fans and newcomers. Seeing beloved characters return can trigger fond memories of previous games, which excites fans. However, the challenge for Gearbox Software will be to evolve these characters while retaining the essence that made them fan favorites.
Time.news Editor: Very true. One of the hallmarks of the Borderlands series has been it’s unique humor and quirky storytelling. Do you think the new installment will continue this tradition?
Jason Lee: Without a doubt! The borderlands series is well known for its humor, irreverent style, and the colorful cast of characters. From the footage we saw,it seems thay’re sticking to that formula. I suspect they’ll also introduce new characters that align with this offbeat humor, which will help keep the game feeling fresh while still honoring its roots.
Time.news Editor: that’s reassuring for fans! Speaking of freshness, do you anticipate any innovative gameplay features or mechanics that might be introduced in Borderlands 4?
Jason Lee: Based on the snippets we saw, it looks like they might be expanding the gunplay mechanics and possibly incorporating more RPG elements. Gearbox has a reputation for pushing boundaries, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they introduce new loot systems or cooperative gameplay enhancements that encourage team strategies. It’s really exciting to think about the potential for multi-player dynamics.
Time.news Editor: That sounds amazing! With the pressures of high expectations from the fanbase, how do you think Gearbox is positioning itself to meet and possibly exceed those expectations?
Jason Lee: Gearbox has a history of listening to their community, and I believe they understand the stakes with Borderlands 4. They’ve taken their time to develop the sequel, with an initial reveal already at Gamescom earlier this year. This shows their commitment to delivering a quality product.Engaging with player feedback and refining their gameplay based on that input will be key in ensuring that the game resonates well with the audience.
