The first case of sheep and goat plague in a livestock unit in Attica was announced by the Ministry of Rural Development and Food.
Additionally, two more cases were found in Larissa within the surveillance and control zones.
Furthermore, in a statement from the Region of Attica, it was noted that its response to the appearance of the first case of African swine fever for sheep and goats in a livestock unit in Aspropyrgos was already underway, as Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias had put all relevant services on alert.
Specifically, for several days, two livestock units that had legally obtained live sheep and goats from Romania had been placed in quarantine by the personnel of the Local Disease Control Centers (LTDC) of the Region. After the notification from the owners of a unit in Aspropyrgos regarding suspicious symptoms in their animals, the veterinarians of the Region proceeded with blood tests, confirming the first case in Attica.
Immediately, the strict protocols of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food were implemented, which provide for the mass culling and sanitary burial of the sheep and goats of the unit. At the same time, the veterinary services of the Region will thoroughly “sift” the area to identify and promptly address potential incidents, while a wide-ranging meeting will be convened to formulate a holistic strategy to combat the epidemic.
Teams from the Region of Attica went to Thessaly to assist the local authorities.
