The sudden appearance of cases of monkeypox in humans has triggered the need to test antiviral treatments to manage this new infection. The journal “The Lancet Infectious Diseases” publishes the first data of a small retrospective study carried out on seven patients diagnosed with monkeypox in the United Kingdom between 2018 and 2021 in which it is suggested that two antiviral drugs could shorten symptoms and reduce the amount of time a patient is contagious.

The patients analyzed in the study not only represent the first cases of nosocomial transmission and home transmission outside Africa, but the work reports the response of patients to the first off-label use of two different antiviral drugs, brincidofovir and tecovirimatto treat the disease.
