First female head of British Intelligence Agency

London ∙ Britain’s GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters) is the first woman to head the intelligence agency in its 104-year history. Foreign Secretary James Cleverley nominated Ann Keast Butler, now deputy head of Military Intelligence 5 (MI5), to head GCHQ. Will take charge next month.

GCHQ conducts intelligence focused on the communications of Britain’s adversaries. Keith Butler, who has 30 years of experience in the national security field, previously headed the agency’s counterterrorism division.
