Former President Park Geun-hye, who is serving a 22-year prison sentence for corruption and abuse of power, has been added to the amnesty list as part of a New Year’s amnesty, the South Korean Ministry of Justice has announced.
The government said in a statement issued by South Korea’s Ministry of Justice on December 24 (December 24, 2021) that “before 2022, 3094 people, including former President Park Geun-hye, will be granted amnesty.”
Park was hospitalized three times in 2021 for persistent shoulder and lower back discomfort. According to the Yonhap news agency, the reason for his inclusion in the list of people who have been granted a general pardon due to his health condition.
During his tenure, former President Park Geun-hye was forced to resign in 2017 due to political controversy over the influence of his friend Choi Soon-sil in government decisions.

Former President Park Geun-hye has been sentenced in 2018 to 22 years in prison on charges of receiving a total of 3.5 billion won ($ 2.9 million) in bribes from three former National Intelligence Service chiefs from 2013 to 2016.
Park became the country’s first female president in 2013. Park, 69, has been hospitalized several times due to shoulder and back pain.
Born on February 2, 1952, she was the daughter of former South Korean President Park Geun-hye. His father, Park Chung-hee, seized power during the 1961 coup and ruled for 18 years until 1979.
She also became the first woman in the country after Park Geun-hye’s mother was shot dead in 1974. Five years later, in 1979, after her father, Park Chung-hee, was killed by a security chief, Park Geun-hye became the country’s first female president.
