For the first time, the University of Ioannina will participate in the Olympic Torch Relay, which will be one of the stops on its journey to Paris.
The touching of the Olympic Flame at the University will take place on Wednesday, April 24, at 9.45 am, with the honorary ceremony being part of the celebration of the 60 years of the University of Ioannina.
The Olympic Flame will arrive at the Campus at 9.45 am. The first torchbearer will be the student Elena Papastamatopoulou, a member of the National Para Taekwondo team, who will receive the Olympic Torch and will travel the route within the Campus to the “Karolos Papoulias” Conference Center, where the touching of the altar will take place.
This will be followed by the raising of the flags of the Olympic Games, of France and Greece, and the recitation of the respective anthems by a band and choir of students from the Department of Music Studies of the University of Ioannina. Afterwards, the ceremony will be greeted by the rector of the University of Ioannina, Anna Batistatou, the consul general of France, Jean-Luc Lavaud, as a representative of the Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games “Paris 2024” and the president of the Olympic Torch Relay Committee, Thanasis Vassiliadis, as a representative of the Hellenic Olympic Committee. .
The ceremony will conclude with a musical program by students of the Department of Music Studies, curated by the Department’s EDIP member Antonios Berveris. The Olympic Flame will depart from the University site with the second torchbearer, student Ari Zaraga, Panhellenic gold medalist in the sport of judo.
