Under the idea Towards a new press model, with the light of a paradigm, the first national Juan Antonio Borrego in memoriam journalism colloquium is held this Tuesday in Sancti Spíritus, convened by the honorary professorship that bears the name of the notable Cuban journalist, attached to the Faculty of Humanities of the José Martí Pérez University; the Escambray newspaper and the Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC) in that province.

According to Enrique Ojito Linares, organizer of the event, the program includes several conferences dedicated to highlighting the career of the man who was director of the Escambray newspaper for almost twenty-five years and an active Granma correspondent.

Hence, the academic agenda of the meeting includes conferences focused on these two dimensions of their professional performance.

The event, considered a pre-event of the VII International Scientific Conference Yayabociencia 2023, becomes a platform to delve into the legacy of someone who is described by the national presidency of the UPEC as a paradigm of leader within the journalistic union in Cuba.

28 works by 29 authors, belonging to a dozen provinces of the country, were presented at the event. The authors include two students from the Faculty of Communication of the University of Havana: one from Sancti Spíritus and another from Mayabeque.

Works from 8 provincial newspapers (Invasor, Escambray, Girón, Sierra Maestra, Adelante, La Demajagua, 5 de Septiembre and newspaper 26) and 6 national or international media outlets (Juventud Técnica, Alma Mater, Caimán Barbudo, Cubaperiodistas, Workers and Latin Press).

The Colloquium highlights Borrego’s indisputable work as a correspondent for the Granma newspaper for 29 years, based on extremely high professionalism, command of the territory, use of all genres, journalistic nose, fraternal connection with the province’s media and accredited national correspondents. in Sancti Spíritus, among a thousand other reasons, including its Creole humor.

Ronquillo highlights—and insists—on the unavoidable need to transform, for the good of the entire Cuban press, its management model.
