First Lady of Ukraine Participates in Yalta European Strategy Forum
Kiev, Ukraine – Olena Zelenska, the First Lady of Ukraine, attended the annual meeting of the Yalta European Strategy (YES) forum on September 10. The forum, founded by Ukrainian businessman Viktor Pinchuk, aims to promote Ukraine’s accession to the European Union and discuss the country’s European future in a global context.
This year marked the eighteenth meeting of the forum, titled “Leadership Center: The Future is Decided in Ukraine.” The event was attended by President Volodymyr Zelensky, forum founder Viktor Pinchuk, CNN presenter Fareed Zakaria, Stanford University’s Francis Fukuyama, and other international and Ukrainian figures.
During the forum, First Lady Olena Zelenska participated in a discussion with Eastern European historian and Yale University professor Timothy Snyder on the topic of “We Heal Ukraine: Rehabilitation and Mental Health.” Zelenska highlighted the importance of mental health for the entire society, particularly in wartime conditions.
She also shared insights from the third summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen, which took place on September 6 in Kiev. The summit focused on the theme of “Mental Health: The Fragility and Resilience of the Future.” Zelenska discussed the all-Ukraine mental health program called “How are you?,” which has been implemented in the country since 2022 to address war trauma and provide psychological assistance to Ukrainians.
During her speech, Zelenska emphasized the need to overcome the stigma surrounding mental health. She said, “Everyone must understand that self-care is not selfish, it is a responsibility. And when you do not have a resource, you will not be able to help your family or your community.”
Mental health, according to Zelenska, is the foundation of resilience. She stressed the importance of promoting self-help skills to reduce or prevent mental health issues.
The annual meeting of the Yalta European Strategy forum serves as a platform for leaders and experts from Ukraine and around the world to discuss Ukraine’s future and its path towards European integration.
