BOLZANO. First lessons for 60 freshmen of the new degree course in “Medicine and Surgery” at the Claudiana University Center in Bolzano. The President of the Province Arno Kompatscher retraced the process that led from the idea to the accreditation of the course: “Starting from the need to train doctors in the area, today we have reached an important milestone which will open new perspectives both for the healthcare system and for the world of local search”. For Health Councilor Hubert Messner: “A starting point, not an arrival point, which will allow us to attract students and doctors stimulated by the university context”.
Messner spoke of a “memorable day for South Tyrol”, which will contribute to further developing South Tyrol’s healthcare system and its attractiveness as a place to study and work. Coordinator Horand Meier, who has accompanied the project since its inception, expressed satisfaction and thanked all the interlocutors involved. The dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the Catholic University, Antonio Gasbarrini, connected from Rome, outlined the desired developments: “Medicine and Surgery Bolzano is a project with an international scope, from which to start to build bridges with institutions of excellence of the German-speaking area in Europe, to the point of offering multiple degrees”.
The president of the degree course, Maurizio Sanguinetti, illustrated the innovative aspects of the curriculum. To reach internationally recognized standards of competence, the training path is close to that of European and US universities. Without forgetting the needs of the territory, such as attention to the teaching of general medicine and primary care subjects.
