First monkeypox outbreak confirmed in Switzerland

It has been confirmed that a person has been infected with monkeypox for the first time in Switzerland.

Swiss health officials announced on Saturday that the country’s first monkeypox infection has been confirmed in a man living in the Swiss province of Bern.

The person is said to have contracted the monkey virus while abroad.

The Bern Health Authority said the patient, who had come to the hospital for self-treatment, had been diagnosed with the infection and was now isolated at home.

The report added that all those who were in contact with him had been informed. The case came to the attention of health officials on Friday, the next day it was confirmed as monkey pox.

Already, Switzerland is currently on the list of many Western countries, including Britain, Germany, Spain, Sweden and the United States, which have confirmed the spread of the monkey virus.

Meanwhile, Hans Kluge, the World Health Organization’s regional director for Europe, warned on Friday that the spread of the monkeypox virus across Europe could increase the risk in the coming months.

Symptoms of this rare disease include fever, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, chills, fatigue and chickenpox rash on the hands and face.

The monkeypox virus is spread through infected person’s skin lesions or droplets and shared objects such as bedding or towels.

According to the World Health Organization, monkeypox usually resolves after two to four weeks.
