First official visit to Africa by ILO Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo

DAKAR (ILO News) – The ILO Director-General’s first visit to Senegal will be an opportunity to discuss with the Senegalese authorities, employers and unions the main current issues in the world of work and present his project of the Global Coalition for Justice Social.

Houngbo will meet with the ministers responsible for Labour, Employment and Vocational Training, Crafts and the Informal Sector. He will also meet with the social partners (employers’ and workers’ organizations) and with the “Country Team” of the United Nations system.

Among the topics to be discussed are: decent employment for young people and women, labor migration and protection of migrant workers, extension of social protection, formalization of the informal economy, crisis and social dialogue, respect for international labor standards.

Houngbo is scheduled to speak about the Global Coalition for Social Justice, an initiative aimed at prioritizing social justice and reducing inequalities in national and global policy-making, as well as development cooperation, finance, trade and investment agreements.

The ILO Director-General will also visit the artisan village of Soumbédioune, on the west coast of Dakar, where he plans to meet artisans who are beneficiaries of an ILO-Belgium project in Senegal aimed at building strong national social protection systems to cover the informal economy workers and their families, facilitate their access to healthcare and enable them to meet the challenges of tomorrow.

The press is invited to cover the various activities of this visit. At the end of his visit, the ILO Director-General will give a press conference on Friday, January 27, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at the Raddison Blu Hotel in Dakar.
