Built by the Government of the Federal District, the space aims for interaction and fun for the city residents’ pets.

The walk on Sunday (22) for the dog Nina, aged 1 year and eight months, was different. Used to walking with their tutor Elza Batista Valadares through the streets of Samambaia, this time the duo went to a new place. The retiree decided to take her shih tzu to visit the first ParCão de Fern, located on Block 101. “It was my neighbors who told me that they now had this park. As Nina is crazy about walking and running, I wanted to bring her to meet her”, reveals Elza.

baptized by ParCão K9 Heloísa, the space was opened to residents and their pets in a ceremony on October 14th. The equipment was implemented by the Government of the Federal District (GDF) through the Regional Administration of Samambaia, which invested its own materials and resources – a value of R$ 30 thousand – and was responsible for the construction.

“There were too many requests from residents here in Samambaia for the construction of the park. We did this first one with resources from the administration. But the idea is to build others in the city through Adopt a Square Project”, says the administrator of Samambaia, Marcos Leite Araújo. “I have received many compliments from residents. I was happy with the response, so this should be the first of many,” he added.

Pet structure

The park has two grassy spaces surrounded by fences, with circuits of tires, shackles and wooden stumps, as well as seesaws, all for the dogs to use.

Nina’s owner loved the place, because it will help the dog to socialize better with other dogs. “She is very shy because she is not very used to other dogs. So, this space will be great for her, I intend to be here always”, comments the woman.

Another owner who is excited about the opening of ParCão de Samambaia is military police officer Yuri Basílio, 31. He takes little Nutella, a 2-year-old Pomeranian, to the place every day. “Every day I bring her here to play. I brought her here before the renovation, because there was a lawn space here and she always liked it. But now she’s much better,” he reveals.

“In the past there was no one, because it was just bush. With the renovation, it has improved a lot and more people are bringing their pets to visit. Which is great”, comments Basílio, while Nutella has fun on the seesaw.

To ensure good coexistence between animals and without risks, right at the entrance to ParCão there is a list of instructions for animal owners. Guardians must collect pet feces and children under eight years of age must not be left unattended in the area.

It is also recommended that dogs that frequent the space are up to date with their vaccinations. Large dogs must wear a muzzle to enter the area and female dogs in heat cannot use the park during this period.

Currently, the Federal District has more than 20 pet parks. The spaces are spread across Águas Claras, Sudoeste, Cruzeiro, Lago Norte, Parque da Cidade Dona Sarah Kubitschek and Plano Piloto. The locations meet a demand from the city. According to the 2021 District Household Sample Survey (Pdad), 49.6% of households have at least one pet, of which 41.9% are dogs.

Homage

The first ParCão de Samambaia was named K9 Heloísa. This is a tribute from the space to the dog Helô, who served for almost six years in the Dog Policing Battalion (BPCães), of the Military Police of the Federal District. The dog, who died in August this year, contributed to several operations to combat crime and drug trafficking in the administrative region.
