The original creative notes written by poet Lee Sang (1910-1937) have been revealed for the first time. The 70-page notebook written in Japanese contains a total of 23 works, including “Record of Fear” and “1931.”

The National Museum of Korean Literature released more than five days of notes from Lee Sang’s manuscript, stating, “These are the materials that researchers who want to know about the creative form before translation have been desperately looking for,” and “You can catch a glimpse of the depth of Lee Sang’s literature through his creative notes written in fine brush strokes.”

The notebook that was recently revealed was donated by the bereaved family of literary critic Cho Yeon-hyeon, who passed away in 1981. Previously, Lee Sang’s posthumous notebook was published four times since 1960 in Korean translations by Kim Su-yeong, Kim Yun-seong, and Yu Jeong. However, this is the first time that the original Japanese text has been revealed in person. Professor Kim Joo-hyun of Kyungpook National University’s Department of Korean Language and Literature, who participated in the verification, said, “There are not many materials that have Lee Sang’s Japanese handwriting remaining,” and “Fortunately, Lee Sang’s handwritten signature remains in this notebook, and that handwriting is identical to that in his ‘Countryside Notebook,’ which he owned.”

The above notes can be seen at the ‘Pulse of Korean Literature’, an exhibition of rare materials from the National Museum of Korean Literature, which opens on the 28th. The exhibition is held on the first floor of Chunchugwan in Cheong Wa Dae, Jongno-gu, Seoul until November 24th.
