Marburg. The women’s basketball Bundesliga (DBBL) has unveiled its schedule, and it’s generating some buzz.
New Season Features “Regional Derbies”
The DBBL is shaking things up with a new format emphasizing regional matchups, aiming for increased fan engagement.
BC Pharmaserv Marburg will kick off their season on Saturday, September 27, at 7 p.m. against the Freiburg rivals. This marks their first league game of the new campaign.
The Blue Dolphins’ home opener is scheduled for Friday, October 3, at the Georg-Gaßmann-Halle. They will face MBC from Halle in their first home contest.
What is the new structure for the DBBL season? The league is introducing four “regional derbies,” dividing teams into northern and southern groups. This format means teams will play everyone within their respective divisions. Marburg’s regional opponents include Freiburg, Keltern, Nördlingen, and Saarlouis.
BC head coach José Araújo’s squad will play a total of 22 regular-season games. The league’s goal with this divisional split is to foster “more emotions” among fans.
The regular season concludes for Marburg on Saturday, March 28, with an away game against the Royals from Saarlouis. The top eight teams will then advance to the playoffs to compete for the German championship. Notably, there will be no relegation from the league this season.
