The first trailer for A Complete Unknown, a film depicting the life of Bob Dylan, was presented this Wednesday. The biopic will hit North American theaters in December of this year and is expected to premiere in Portugal in early 2025.
Set in New York City in the early 1960s, the film follows the rise to fame of the then 19-year-old musician Bob Dylan.
In the newly released teaser, actor Timothée Chalamet, star of Dune, Wonka, and Call Me by Your Name, portrays the legendary American singer-songwriter and sings A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall, a song from 1963.
The film, based on the biography Dylan Goes Electric! by Elijah Wald, will be directed by James Mangold, known for Girl, Interrupted, Logan, and Ford v Ferrari, among other box office hits. He also directed Walk the Line, a 2005 film about the life of another folk legend: Johnny Cash, portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix.
“The first time I sat down with him, he asked me, ‘What is this movie about?’,” James Mangold recounts in an interview with Rolling Stone, referring to one of his conversations with Bob Dylan.
“And I told him: ‘It’s about someone who is suffocating in Minnesota, leaves behind all their friends and family, reinvents themselves in a new place, makes new friends, builds a new family, becomes a phenomenal success, starts to suffocate again — and runs away’,” he summarized.
Chalamet will co-star with Elle Fanning in the role of Sylvie Russo (another name for Suze Rotolo, Bob Dylan’s former girlfriend), Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, and Edward Norton as Pete Seeger.
