First vaccinations against monkey pox virus: 50 Amsterdammers called up

by time news

Today, the Amsterdam GGD has called on 50 people to get a vaccine against the monkeypox virus. Today is the first day that people can get a shot against the virus. The aim is to eventually vaccinate 10,500 people in the city.

The GGD hopes to be able to call on more people in the coming days. The intention is that about a hundred people a day can come by in the long term.

Risk groups

For the time being, the vaccinations are only intended for specific risk groups, such as men who have varying sexual contacts with other men and who participate in a trial with PrEP. That is a preventive measure against HIV. People who are known on the soapoli also receive an invitation for a vaccination.

Anyone who wants to be vaccinated must get two shots. There is a total of four weeks between the first and second injection.

Infection

People infected with the virus can notice this from headaches, fever, chills and fatigue. A few days later, there is a rash with blisters, which then become scabs. The moment the blisters appear, you are contagious to others. The GGD asks people who get the blisters to go into quarantine.
