Fisker Ocean under investigation after claims of ‘unintended movements’

by time news

Ever since it was shown for the first time almost two years ago, it has been referred to as one of the most exciting electric car innovations in a long time. Many innovative solutions, a long range and a good price were just some of what the American manufacturer enticed with.

We are talking about the Fisker Ocean SUV, which within a short time received more than 60,000 pre-orders – including a couple of thousand from Norwegian customers.

Debris in the machinery

Since then, not everything has gone smoothly for Fisker, which produces its cars at the Magna Steyr factory in Austria. Production has so far been far lower than initially planned, partly thanks to “problems with logistics”. As of 19 February 2024, there are only 315 Ocean copies registered in Norway.

Last month, news broke that Fisker was being investigated by US safety authorities, after several Ocean owners had reported a sudden reduction in braking power when driving on uneven surfaces. However, the bug was quickly fixed through a software update, according to Fisker.

EXCITING NEWCOMERS: Fisker Ocean has much of what Norwegian customers demand: 4×4 option, good luggage space, long range and favorable prices.

Reinvestigated

But now the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has re-opened an investigation against the car manufacturer, after four owners made allegations of “unintended vehicle movement”. It writes Reuters.

According to the complaints, the problem must be linked to the gear selector. Among other things, situations have arisen where the driver has not been able to put the car in park mode, which can result in the vehicle moving unintentionally, says the report from NHTSA. In one of the cases, the unintentional movement must have led to damage.

Fisker has not yet responded to inquiries from Reuters about the problem. We will update the matter as soon as we know more.

Tesla competitor

With a length of 477 centimetres, a spacious luggage compartment and the ability to tow a trailer of up to 1.8 tonnes, the Ocean goes straight for the throat of the Tesla Model Y.

The top model Ocean Extreme, with a range of 707 kilometres, costs NOK 655,454 ready on the road, according to Fisker’s website.

The entry-level Ocean Sport model, with front-wheel drive and a range of around 440 kilometres, starts at NOK 427,144.

These will compete against Tesla’s upcoming cheap car
