Time.news – There are five blue tennis players who from Sunday, on the clay courts of the Roccabruna Country Club, they will try to win the title of Prince of Monaco. The MonteCarlo Rolex Masters, the second Masters 1000 of the season, will be staged behind closed doors after the tournament in Miami, which last week saw the Italian Jannik Sinner, who surrendered only in the final.
Leading the tricolor patrol will be Fabio Fognini, holder of the title. The Ligurian tennis player, in fact, in 2019 won the Monegasque tournament, not played last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Fognini was the first and, until today, the only blue able to win such a prestigious event in the international circus of the racket since the “ATP Championships Series” circuit (now Masters 1000) was born in 1990, that is the one that includes the nine most important tennis competitions in the world (including that of Rome) after the four Grand Slam trials.
With the Ligurian, Matteo Berrettini, Jannik Sinner, Lorenzo Sonego (still in the semi-final, in the Sardegna Open) and the wild card Lorenzo Musetti (just out of the Cagliari competition) at the starting line in the main draw. To them we could add some other Italian players coming from the qualifications.
Here too there are five blue tennis players, namely Stefano Travaglia, Marco Cecchinato, Salvatore Caruso, Gianluca Mager and Thomas Fabbiano. The main draw was drawn, in which they appear eight players from the top ten of the ATP ranking (including Berrettini).
Only Thiem and Federer will be missing; on stage the top three in the world, namely Djokovic, Medvedev and Nadal, who won in Monte Carlo on eleven occasions. These are the possible quarter-finals (taking into account the top eight seeds): Djokovic-Zverev, Tsitsipas-Berrettini, Rublev-Nadal and Schwartzman-Medvedev.
The Ligurian Fognini was present at the draw ceremony. Just the title holder in the first round will face Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic. The Djokovic-Sinner match in the second round is likely. The South Tyrolean will play on his debut against Albert Ramos-Vinolas. Sonego, on the other hand, will challenge Marton Fucsovics in his debut match: in case of victory he will face Alexander Zverev.
Berrettini, who will enter the race from the second round, wait for the winner of the match between Alex De Minaur and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Finally, an unlucky urn for Musetti. The young tennis player from Carrara will make his debut against Aslan Karatsev, this year semifinalist at the Australian Open. In the second round, if successful, the Tuscan would find Stefanos Tsitsipas on his way.
