Gang violence is once again being singled out in Guatemala. Five men and three women died Saturday in a shooting in a store in the suburbs of the country’s capital.
“Inside a liquor store, three women and five men were shot and injured (…) and died,” firefighters said on the social network occurred in zone 6, located on the northern outskirts of the capital Guatemala.
Homicides on the rise
The head of communications within the National Civil Police, Inspector Edwin Monroy, said that “two suspected hitmen” from the Barrio 18 gang were arrested by the police. The two men were in possession of firearms, including an “assault rifle”, he said.
According to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (Inacif), 4,263 homicides were recorded in Guatemala in 2022, or 4.5% more than in 2021.
