Although summer won’t officially start until June 21, the heat is already here. The high temperatures have begun to be felt in much of the national territory, also affecting the proper functioning of vehicles.

For this reason, taking into account which are the parts of the cars that fail the most as a result of high temperatures, will be essential to reduce the risk of a breakdown. From the Spanish Association of Collaborating Entities of the Administration in the Technical Inspection of Vehicles (AECA-ITV) they explain them to us:

The motor: If the engine begins to heat up well above normal while traveling, it is advisable to stop (before the cylinder head or any other element can be damaged), wait for the engine temperature to drop and check the coolant levels .

In fact, before embarking on any trip, and especially during the summer, it is important to check the level and condition of all the vehicle’s liquids (coolant, brakes, oil, windshield wipers, among others).

The turbo-charger: It is one of the components that suffers the most from high temperatures because, due to its location, it is not easily accessible for cooling and it is the oil itself that is responsible for lubricating and cooling it. To avoid damage to this part of the vehicle, it is advisable that, upon arrival at your destination, you leave the engine running for a couple of minutes to cool it down and avoid turning it off suddenly, since the oil deteriorates and damages the turbine shaft.

The tires: High temperatures are the worst enemy of tires, which is why during the summer blowouts are much more frequent. It is essential that the pressure of the four wheels of the car be checked periodically and, mainly, before making any trip. Keep in mind that the lower the tire pressure, not only does it increase fuel consumption, but it is also easier to have a blowout.

The breaks: On vacation it is normal to overload our vehicle with luggage. That extra weight, together with the high external temperatures, make the brakes get hotter than normal. To avoid any problem with the brakes, in addition to checking the condition of the calipers, pads and discs, the brake fluid level should be checked and, if necessary, changed before any trip or according to the prescriptions indicated by the vehicle manufacturer.

The air conditioning: It is recommended that the air conditioning circuit be checked before embarking on a long trip, especially if it has not been used for many months. And it is that the temperature changes to which the vehicle is subjected can cause small gas leaks to appear in the system. A gas recharge every two years can be used to maintain proper operation of the air conditioning, although it is advisable to carry out a review of the circuit as indicated by the vehicle manufacturer.
