A lorry and a Maruti van collided head-on this afternoon near the Barappalayam bus stand near Sivagiri in Erode district. Five of the eight passengers in the Maruti van died on the spot. For details on this,
Thenmozhi (age 20) hails from PKS town, Muthu Counten Estate, Inchampally village near Modakkurichi. His relatives Manju (age 18) along with Deivana, Arukani, Muthusamy, Kumaresan and Mohan were traveling in a rented Maruti van belonging to Prakash alias Padiyappa (age 26) from Modakkurichi in the early hours of the morning.
On the way home, the Maruti van crashed into an oncoming lorry as it passed the Barapalayam bus stand near Sivagiri in the afternoon. Five people were killed on the spot in the incident.
They are Thenmozhi, Manju, Arukkani, Deivanai and Maruti van driver Prakash. The body of the deceased was taken to Perundurai Government Medical College.
Kumaresan, Muthuchamy and Mohan are receiving treatment at the Erode Government Hospital.
Sivagiri police have registered a case and are conducting a serious investigation.
