In Daruvar, which is located 130 kilometers east of the capital Zagreb, a person armed with a firearm entered the nursing home and opened fire.

At least five people were killed and several were injured, reports HRT.

The suspect fled the scene, but was later caught and detained.

The police said that they were informed about the accident at 10:10 a.m., and also confirmed that the suspect entered the nursing home and fired a firearm.

“The person involved in the preparation of this crime is in police custody,” the law enforcement officers said in a statement.

The number of those killed was later confirmed by Prime Minister Andrejs Plenkovičs.

“We are horrified by the murder of five people in an old people’s home in Daruvar,” the Prime Minister said in a statement on social media.

The attacker was a “retired military police officer”, reports the newspaper “Jutarnji list”. He killed his mother, as well as other residents and employees of the nursing home.

Shootings, like zero experienced, have been rare in this Balkan country.

Last year, in the neighboring country of Serbia, there were several shootings with many victims. Ten people were killed in a school massacre in the capital, Belgrade.
