Copenhagen: Emergency landings are reported many times, but a Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) flight was forced to do so because of a rat. The flight from Oslo, the capital of Norway, to Malaga, Spain had to be diverted to Copenhagen after a passenger found a live rat in his food during the flight. The plane had to make an emergency landing after this shocking incident which took place on 18 September.

Threats to safety

An airline spokesperson confirmed to news agency AFP that it was in line with company procedures as the rat was posing a ‘safety risk’. Jarle Borrestad, a passenger boarding the plane, shared the incident on social media. Borrestad wrote, ‘Believe it or not. A woman sitting next to me opened her food and a rat came out of it.’

He further wrote, ‘Now we have turned back and landed at CPH (Copenhagen Airport) to change the flight.’ At the same time, the spokesperson of the airline said that the airline has strict rules regarding rats in the plane. He said that the airline will review with its partner who delivers food so that this does not happen again.

Rats pose a threat to flights

Airlines are particularly cautious about rats because they can pose a serious threat by biting electrical wires on a plane. A SAS spokesman said the incident was handled according to the airline’s procedures. The spokesman said the plane was diverted and the passengers were sent to Malaga on another plane.

Decision taken as a precaution

Though the rat posed no immediate threat to passengers, the airline’s decision to divert the plane was seen as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of everyone on board. After the passengers were changed to another plane, the flight proceeded to its final destination without any further problems.
