Quick-witted, funny, articulate – that’s what most of us would probably like to be like when it comes down to it. When flirting, for example, or in a job interview. Bryan Chiang wants to be able to score with technology in such situations. The computer science student at Stanford University in California has developed a kind of glasses that, according to him, should provide “charisma on demand”. “It listens to your ongoing conversation and tells you exactly what to say next,” says Chiang. RizzGPT is the name of the software behind the viewing device. It uses the chatbot ChatGPT, which can be used to create human-like conversations. Chiang linked the AI application to an augmented reality monocle from Brilliant Labs. Since the viewing device, which has a camera, microphone and a projection screen, is an open-source product, Chiang was able to modify it to suit his needs. The computer science student programmed RizzGPT in such a way that it records conversations via the microphone, converts them into text and sends them to ChatGPT. The answer is then displayed on the monocle screen. So far it’s just a prototype, which Chiang says still delivers bugs. The 22-year-old does not yet have any plans for commercial use. Instead, he wants to show what is possible with this technology. “Basically, by bringing 5G connectivity, AR glasses, the hardware and intelligence together, we see creating a new way of interacting with these systems, a new operating system where it’s much more natural. You don’t have to push users into it to use certain apps, websites or tools. Computers will feel a lot more like human relationships we have. You just have to ask something instead of making it yourself.” The monocle shouldn’t replace the human in the conversation, says Chiang. Rather, he sees his development as a tool or inspiration, especially for people suffering from social anxiety or shyness.
