Flood areas were spared: But new storms and heavy rain are threatening – News

LUCKY!

The people in the flood areas in Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia got off lightly on Sunday night: Contrary to previous fears, it remained almost dry there.

After some rainfall on Saturday afternoon, it hardly rained in the regions during the night, said a spokeswoman for the German Weather Service (DWD) on Sunday morning. During the night, an average of five to ten liters of rain fell per square meter. However, even such small amounts could have dire consequences, as many drains are blocked and the sewer systems are damaged.

For the people in the heavily devastated Ahr valley in Rhineland-Palatinate, the situation has eased somewhat. On Sunday morning the sun was shining there from time to time.

On Saturday, the weather forecast worried residents and rescuers. The German Weather Service had expected local precipitation of a maximum of 30 to 40 liters per square meter. The weather could worsen on Sunday, it said. An evacuation offer was therefore made to the communities particularly affected. In the endangered areas of Schuld, Insul, Dümpelfeld and Bad Neuenahr, it should be possible to take people to an emergency shelter in Leimersdorf by shuttle buses.

Flood areas were spared

But things turned out differently: “The flood areas were literally circumnavigated by the storm,” says graduate meteorologist Jacqueline Kernn to BILD. But it poured in the north-west, south-west and south of Germany: “In Dinklage (Lower Saxony) 30 liters per square meter came down in half an hour, in Steinfurt 26 liters. It was similar in Saarland with rain amounts of 20 to 40 liters. “South of the Danube, up to 50 liters fell selectively, in Weingarten (Ravensburg district) a total of 57 liters.”

The western Eifel also suffered a lot, confirms Dominik Jung from the Qmet weather service: “There were up to 30 liters per square meter there, but significantly different from ten days ago, when there were extensive downpours.”

And further: “On Saturday evening, neighboring Belgium was again badly affected,” says Jung. Cars were washed away in the floods. ”In the southern Belgian town of Dinant on the Maas, streets were damaged and numerous houses flooded on Saturday. The material damage is “significant”, said Mayor Axel Tixhon, according to the Belga news agency.

There are currently no official severe weather warnings

The danger of new heavy rain and flooding is not over yet! However: Official Severe weather warnings does not exist for Germany at the moment, says DWD meteorologist Kernn, but: “In the south there is the greatest risk of storms.” People should therefore remain vigilant and follow developments.

And there could be strong thunderstorms again on Sunday. “The air is very humid and warm, it can boil.” Temperatures can reach up to 30 degrees in the east and up to 27 degrees in the west. And it remains unstable, with showers and thunderstorms: “No all-clear, but where they happen is completely open.”

The number of deaths from the flood was 132, as on the previous day, the number of injuries was 766. 149 people are still missing.
