After the sub-prefecture of Benty, it is the turn of Kaback to be hit by a flood leading to the death of a 6-year-old child and much material damage in the districts of Yelibanet, Konimodia and the Fria sector.

It was around 8 p.m. that the populations of the Kaback sub-prefecture were awakened by a flood, accompanied by a strong wave.

Much damage was reported, including houses and motorbikes swept away by the mud. We also noted damaged hair removal machines, generators, food, beds, mattresses, clothes, canoes and fishing nets. The central cemetery of Yelibanet was invaded by sand and other debris.

On the scene, Mamadouba Soumah, president of the Yelibanet district, spoke about the circumstances of this tragedy: “I was awakened by my population, that there was a flood. Our houses, which are made of mud, were invaded by sea water, others by sand. The wave took away many of our important items. We are concerned about this situation at the moment. Because we have no place to sleep and what we eat has been destroyed by the water.”

The inhabitants of this island say they are worried. According to them, within two to three years if arrangements are not made, we will no longer talk about Kaback which will be invaded by water because of the filling.

Present on the scene, Angeline Dylé Tounkara, prefectural coordinator of the National Agency for Emergency and Humanitarian Disaster Management (ANGUCH) assessed the damage, before placing responsibility for the facts in these terms: “This flood was caused by the companies that do landfilling along the sea. After this flood, we found the inhabitants of this island living in a deplorable and painful situation. We are calling on the State and people of good will to help them. Because this year, they will not be able to work in their flooded plains.”

As soon as he was informed, Chief Sergeant Lansana Mansaré, Deputy Sub-Prefect of Kaback, went to the scene of the disaster to find out the reality and raise awareness among the victims.

“We came to boost the morale of the victims, so that they do not think that they have been abandoned to their own devices. After our visit here, we will make the report in order to inform our hierarchical bosses. We saw the damage which was numerous, they lost almost everything. We join them to ask for help from the government and people of good will,” he declared.

Floods of this type have become recurrent in the coastal communities of Forécariah.
