Floods hit thousands in Malaysia

by time news

Due to severe flooding after heavy rains, thousands of people in Malaysia have to be brought to safety. The authorities promised swift evacuation measures on Saturday. After sustained heavy rainfall since Friday morning, many inhabited areas were flooded and motorways became impassable. More than 3,500 people had to be brought to safety in the wealthiest state of Selangor, as Selangor Prime Minister Amirudin Shari said.

He described the weather as “abnormal”. Meteorologists predicted additional heavy rains for twelve of the 16 states and territories. Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob put the army, police and security authorities on alert in order to bring those affected to safety, as he announced on the online service Facebook.

At the end of the year, stormy weather occurs again and again in the tropical Southeast Asian country. Floods make evacuation measures necessary on a regular basis. In the worst floods in decades, around 118,000 people had to flee the water in 2014.
