Research continues today in Nova Scotia, Canada. Following flooding caused by torrential rains in the province, four people, including two children, were missing on Saturday after an empty vehicle was found.

This unoccupied van was found underwater in a field flooded by the torrential rains that hit this Canadian province on Saturday, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said in a statement. Industrial pumping equipment was mobilized to lower the water level in the search area, the RCMP said.

The two children, whose age has not been specified, were traveling in a vehicle which was submerged in the company of three other people who managed to escape. Two other people who disappeared in similar circumstances are still missing. These two separate events occurred in the West Hants region, about fifty kilometers northwest of Halifax, the capital of this eastern Canadian province.

Record floods

Already hard hit by Hurricane Fiona last year and by forest fires in late May, Nova Scotia suffered record flooding on Saturday caused by torrential rains that dumped the equivalent of three months of precipitation in a few hours. Halifax Mayor Mike Savage spoke of “rains of biblical proportions”.

The sudden accumulation of water and the flooding of rivers have cut many roads, damaged bridges and devastated many houses. A state of emergency has been declared for 14 days throughout the province, an administrative measure aimed at facilitating the deployment of relief and the work of restoring infrastructure.
