The torrential rains that have hit Chad since July have caused 341 deaths and affected 1.5 million people, according to a report published by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

“All 23 provinces of the country are currently affected by flooding, which has become more frequent in recent years,” the report said.

OCHA said the floods had left “164,000 homes destroyed, 259,000 hectares of crops devastated and 66,700 heads of livestock swept away by the waters.”

The UN had warned last week about the impact of “torrential rains and severe flooding” in the African region where Chad is located, and called for “immediate action and sufficient funding to address the climate crisis.”

More than 700,000 people have been affected by severe flooding in South Sudan, OCHA said on 5 September.

The northern summer of 2024 was the hottest ever recorded on the planet, marked by record temperatures, heat waves, drought and floods, according to the European observatory Copernicus.
