Floods in Loire-Atlantique: a man dies in his car trapped by water

This is the first victim of the floods which have affected several French departments for two days. A man missing since Tuesday in Loire-Atlantique has died, the Nantes prosecutor’s office announced Wednesday evening.

The man, aged 73, had taken his vehicle, a Ford Fiesta, to go buy bread mid-morning on Tuesday in the town of Saffré, north of Nantes and southwest of Châteaubriant.

The alert was given early Tuesday afternoon by his partner, explained the Nantes public prosecutor, Renaud Gaudel. She was worried not to see the man come home.

His body found in his submerged car

He was finally found Wednesday in his car, submerged in a flooded river. At the beginning of the afternoon, a witness “reported that the trunk of a vehicle was emerging from a swollen river at the height of a ford,” detailed the magistrate.

“A new intervention by divers from the Nantes gendarmerie made it possible to discover the lifeless body of the wanted man inside the vehicle”, indicated the prosecutor, adding: “everything suggests that the person concerned was is engaged on this axis which was nevertheless cut off from traffic.
