Floodwaters inundated low-lying neighborhoods in the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, after heavy monsoon rains, which, according to police, led to the deaths of at least about 100 people.

Rain-related disasters are common in South Asia during the monsoon season from June to September, but experts say climate change is increasing their severity.
Large areas of Nepal have been inundated since Friday, prompting disaster authorities to warn of the possibility of flash floods in many rivers.
Police spokesman Dan Bahadur Karki said, “The death toll has risen to 101, and 64 people are missing.”
He added, “The death toll is likely to rise as search and rescue operations continue in the affected areas.”
Rivers around the capital, Kathmandu, overflowed, submerging nearby homes.
Three people were able to survive, and the authorities recovered only 20 bodies due to raging flood waters that hampered search operations.
More than 220 people have died in Nepal in rain-related disasters this year.
