Florence, piazzale Michelangelo in bloom for “Bee the change”

«Florence is a bee-friendly city – said Nardella – and from here we want to launch a cry of alarm to draw attention to a sector in crisis due to climate change. The Municipality is implementing a series of actions to increase and protect the environmental heritage and has not used herbicides for the maintenance of public parks for some time ». “Bees and the beekeeping sector are fundamental not only from a production point of view, but also from an environmental point of view – said Del Re – The sector has over 5 thousand beekeepers and 93 thousand hives in Tuscany and is in great suffering due to changes climatic conditions, which lead to extreme weather events. This negatively affects the hives and blooms, which are too often insufficient to guarantee the productivity and sustenance of the hives themselves. The installation in the square is an invitation to everyone to be an engine of change for a new development model that is more sensitive to the environment and the planet we live in.“. According to Palazzo Vecchio, throughout Europe – but in particular in Italy and France – in 2019 the beekeeping sector recorded the worst harvests in history. Nationally, a 41% decrease is estimated compared to 23,300 tons in 2018. “Not just a green installation, but a package of initiatives to make citizens aware of the importance of plants and flowers in the urban context – added Bettini – both as a contribution to environmental protection and as an element of beauty and decor to admire our city. For this reason, we also want to relaunch the flowered balconies competition which, especially at this moment, can represent an opportunity to open up to a new season ». On 26 March, the competition to award the most beautiful balcony organized with the Tuscan Society of Horticulture, the five Districts and the support of the Afam Florentine Pharmacies started.
