Florence, Giuseppe Penone’s «Abete» inaugurated in front of Palazzo Vecchio but not everyone approves of the work: «A dry tree in spring?»

If you could walk along its entire length – 22 meters – by rubbing it with a finger, we would notice a spiral movement of the surface. A tactile “path” that symbolizes, as the artist Giuseppe Penone himself explains “The descent into hell and the rising to the light” of Dante’s literary journey. But you can’t, because “Fir”, this is the name of the sculpture, it is the highest installation ever positioned in front of the arengarium of Palazzo Vecchio. You don’t get to be able to touch it all. The sculpture was inaugurated from director of the Uffizi Eike Schmidt, by the mayor Dario Nardella, by the president of the Eugenio Region Giani, by the councilor for culture of Palazzo Vecchio Tommaso Sacchi, by the councilor of the museum Valdo Spini and by the president of Arte Continua Mario Cristiani, partner of the exhibition.

It is the official opening act of the “Dantedì”, Dante’s national day on the 700th anniversary of his death. And a preview of the exhibition “In-verse trees” which will come to life in the Uffizi from 1st June to 12th September. Already it does discuss. Who calls him «Spelacchio due la revenge» referring to the famous Christmas tree in Rome, the most contested in the history of Christmas. Who, as the mayor Nardella himself joked, has already consulted the mayor about this new work “Starting with the jokes: a passer-by said to me” mayor, it’s spring and you put a dry tree? “”.
