A shooting that began in the early hours of Sunday around several bars and clubs in the city of Tampa, in the state of Florida (USA), left at least two dead and 18 injured, state police said this Sunday (29).
A fight between two groups broke out around 3 a.m. in Ybor City’s historic neighborhood, police said, with hundreds of people filling the streets as clubs and bars closed and then running for their lives as gunfire rang out.
Videos posted on social media platform X showed a chaotic scene of crowds running through the streets to the sound of at least a dozen gunshots. The videos showed police officers struggling to provide aid to victims dressed in costumes for the country’s Halloween celebrations, who were bleeding on the sidewalks.
“Early in the investigation, there are indications that an argument between two groups escalated into weapons being fired, resulting in the death of one man at the scene and the transport of 19 victims to nearby hospitals,” a Tampa police report said.
One of the victims died at the hospital, according to police.
“Our thoughts are with the victims affected by this senseless act, and our detectives are committed to holding those involved accountable,” Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw said in a statement.
One person was arrested on Sunday morning, and police are looking for other suspects in the shooting.
