A flu epidemic is currently affecting Polynesia, after the first wave at the beginning of the year. Seven deaths were recorded. Faced with this situation, the authorities recall the importance of barrier gestures.
“We put on the mask, and we don’t get close to the person” says Henri-Pierre Mallet, head of the health monitoring office at the Health and Social Action Regulatory Agency (ARASS). According to the figures he put forward, seven people died from the flu in a month, including four who recorded in hospital.
As you pass through the hospital center, a first born in the hospital is evidence of his misadventures. He almost went there. He arrived 2 days ago, he will stay in the hospital for a week. “Since I was born to this day I have never been in the hospital and I have never had the flu like this! You have to be careful… I stayed at home for three days. The doliprane gave me some relief. Thanks to God, and the hospital staff, I am still here today“, trust.
In intensive care, 10% of people have the flu. Eight patients have gone through this service since the beginning of the year. A 14-year-old teenager, a 45-year-old adult and six over 65-year-olds. The latter pay the heaviest price, because of their vulnerability.
Faced with this situation, we all have to take gestures of barriers. Instructions already known to the population at risk: “we don’t go near vulnerable people when we’re sick, when we cough, we wear a mask, we wash our hands… it’s always the same, it’s common sense” says Henri-Pierre Mallet.
The virus is spreading. Everyone reacts to it differently. To protect the most vulnerable, the authorities are calling for more attention.
