Flu, RSV & COVID Rising in Green County | News

TULSA, Okla. – Nearly 7.5 million Americans have come down with the flu, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and a surge in respiratory illnesses-including RSV and COVID-is overwhelming hospitals and urgent care clinics nationwide.

Holiday Travel and a Triple Threat of Viruses

A combination of factors is driving a spike in sickness across the country.

  • Flu cases are substantially elevated, particularly in Oklahoma and texas.
  • Hospitals and urgent care centers are experiencing high patient volumes.
  • Simple preventative measures like handwashing and vaccination can significantly reduce risk.
  • Severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, require immediate medical attention.
  • The current surge involves RSV, the flu, and, in some cases, COVID-19.

The current wave of illness isn’t a cause for panic, but it does demand caution, experts say. “A lot of flu across the board and especially in Oklahoma and Texas. There’s a meaningful increasing activity of flu and if you go to the urgent care clinics or doctor’s office, even emergency rooms, they are flooded now with a lot of flu patients,” said Dr. Hiren Patel, Chief medical officer for United Healthcare.

What’s Causing the Spike?

Holiday travel and drastic temperature changes are contributing to the spread of these respiratory viruses. The “big three” currently circulating are RSV, influenza, and COVID-19. Dr. Patel emphasized that while cases are increasing, there’s no need for widespread alarm.

What should you do if you suspect you have the flu? Dr. patel advises practicing good hygiene, getting adequate sleep, and considering vaccination to decrease your chances of getting sick.

Simple habits can make a big difference. “We don’t need to be scared about it; we just need to be cautious and smart on your habits, especially if you know that someone’s coughing or sneezing. try to cover your face, cover your nose from the germs. Handwashing – it will do wonders,” Dr. Patel explained.

When to Seek Medical Attention

While most cases are mild, certain symptoms warrant immediate medical care.”If you are sick and if you can’t breathe, that’s an issue. If your skin is turning blue or yellow, or a congested face, then also it’s an issue,” Dr. Patel stated. “So, I would say that when you have trouble breathing and your oxygen levels go down, those are the severe symptoms…I always suggest that they go seek attention and not stay home. If you have a cough and cold and just congestion you isolate yourself. avoid the infection going to your family members and you can stay home.”

Dr. Patel’s strongest proposal? Wash your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds and, if eligible, get a flu shot. If you are currently experiencing flu symptoms, it’s best to wait until you recover before receiving the vaccine.

Flu Vaccination-Annual flu shots are recommended for everyone 6 months and older. The vaccine helps protect against the most common flu viruses circulating each year and reduces the severity of illness if contracted.
