Common in science fiction films, flying cars are increasingly closer to becoming a reality as a solution to traffic congestion on the ground and its polluting effects, thanks to initiatives such as that of a company in Florida (USA) that has a prototype already tested successfully. “For us it is not science fiction, it should have been done a long time ago,” says Doron Merdinger, founder and executive president of Doron Aerospace, a firm in the Florida city of Pompano Beach that has been working on the design of electric flying vehicles since 2016. with capacity for two passengers.

Merdinger points out that for “many years” the aeronautical and transportation industry has been thinking about this type of vehicle, but it has not been until the advent of the technology and propulsion systems used in drones that it has been possible to set realistic goals in the short term.

“Very simple, intuitive to use and probably much safer than most of the airplanes that exist,” says the executive about the prototype that rests behind him in a hangar, on board of which he made a successful first test flight in July. of this year.

It is a vehicle with a carbon fiber-based chassis, the same used in Formula 1 single-seaters, and that fits in a standard parking lot, with eight propellers and ten propulsion systems. It can travel up to 225 km/h and a cruising speed of 160 km/h and has a load capacity of up to 227 kilos. The starting price is $300,000 (285,000 euros) and the executive points out that he already has up to 370 advance requests, mostly from private clients. He predicts that in 2025 he will be able to roll out the first six Doroni H1 flying cars from the assembly factory, after which a progressive increase in production will follow.

This type of modernized helicopter, silent and powered by electric batteries, falls into the category of what the industry calls eVTOL (Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing), that is, a vertical take-off and landing vehicle that uses electric energy. . US regulators are finalizing the certification processes for the launch of this new means of transport, which, according to the financial firm Morgan Stanley, could represent a market of one trillion dollars (950,000 million euros). Merdinger, whose firm has already raised 4.8 million dollars (4.5 million euros), emphasizes that the uses can be “infinite”, both as a means of personal transportation, as well as for government and military agencies, first responders, emergency departments. police, among others. “And also, to just enjoy life,” he adds.
