The times when women gave birth standing, on all fours or kneeling are to return to Czech obstetrics with a new reclining couch. “It is excellent in that it maximizes the adoption of natural positions during childbirth, allowing the woman to relax and increasing the chance of an uncomplicated birth.” says Ondřej Šimetka, head of obstetrics.
“When we look at any historical scenes that depict childbirth, the mothers are always in vertical positions, never lying down or sitting,” Šimetka added.
Lucie Kazderová (35) experienced her third birth, but her first on the couch. “I see three advantages. A home-like, not a hospital, impression during childbirth, natural positioning and, after childbirth, the possibility to be with your husband and baby next to each other.” the happy mom described.

An avalanche of interest
After the announcement of the news, obstetricians were literally overwhelmed by a wave of enthusiasm from expectant mothers and other Czech obstetricians. “We are delighted to have been able to inspire so many workplaces,” noted head Ondřej Šimetka, saying that the university hospital has already ordered a second couch, which should arrive during the first half of November.
The couch weighs 26 kg, comes from England, where it has been a standard in maternity facilities for several years.
