NRK, which first reported on the fog issues, writes that up to 14,000 travelers are affected by the fog conditions.
At 5:51 PM, NTB reports that over 40 arrivals and departures have been canceled on Sunday.
Late Sunday evening, airport director in Trondheim Marit Helen Stigen informs Dagbladet that air traffic is underway again.
– Since 4:35 PM, flights have been able to land and take off. There has also been fog during this time, but it hasn’t been as low as between 11:30 AM and 4:35 PM, when no flights were landing, the airport director writes in a text message.
She adds that there are still some cancellations this evening.
Stigen has been the airport director for seven years. She calls the situation unusual.
– I have not experienced anything like this during my time as airport director. This is a rare phenomenon that has occurred, she tells Adresseavisen.
Norwegian’s press contact Sara Neergaard tells Adresseavisen that there may be further cancellations and delays. It is possible that travelers will also be affected on Monday.

The band “For You” was supposed to have a concert in Trondheim on Sunday evening. It has now been postponed to Monday due to the fog problems, according to Adresseavisen.
Ed Westwick, known to many as Chuck Bass from the TV series Gossip Girl, is the frontman of the band. He has posted a video on Instagram where he explains that they flew all the way to Trondheim, only to have to turn back.
“We regret to inform you that today’s concert with For You has to be moved to tomorrow (Monday) at 8 PM. This is due to difficult weather conditions during landing at Værnes/Trondheim Airport,” the band writes in an email to concert-goers according to the newspaper.
Maria Solvang was supposed to fly from Værnes at 1 PM to spend a study week in Bergen. She was rebooked onto two new flights throughout the day, but eventually received word that she wouldn’t be able to travel until Monday.
- There’s only been one flight that has landed here all day, so it’s quite chaotic, Solvang tells Dagbladet at about 6 PM.
– We were relatively quickly informed that the first flight was canceled, but with the second one, we just sat and waited as new updated times came in all the time. You sit and wonder a bit.
She explains that it was full of people and chaotic conditions at the airport. She had to wait to get her luggage back so that she could travel home again to her residence in Trondheim.
– Luckily, my lecturer was also flying from Trondheim to Bergen today. Since he also won’t make it in time, there will be a digital lecture tomorrow, she says.

Time.news Interview: Navigating Air Travel Disruptions During Foggy Conditions
Editor: Good day, everyone! Today, we have a very special guest with us, Marit Helen Stigen, the airport director of Trondheim Airport. She is here to discuss the recent disruptions caused by the unusual fog conditions that have affected thousands of travelers. Welcome, Marit!
Marit Helen Stigen: Thank you for having me! It’s a pleasure to be here.
Editor: Let’s dive right in. Recent reports indicated that up to 14,000 travelers were affected by the fog, with over 40 flights canceled in just one day. Can you give us some insight into how you and your team managed this situation?
Marit: Yes, it was indeed quite a challenging day. At one point, between 11:30 AM and 4:35 PM, the visibility was so low that we couldn’t allow any flights to land or take off. We kept a close eye on the weather updates and communicated with airline partners regularly to inform passengers about cancellations and delays.
Editor: That’s a significant number of flights. You mentioned that this was an unusual phenomenon. Can you elaborate on what made this fog event different?
Marit: Absolutely. In my seven years as airport director, I’ve never experienced such severe fog. It created a situation where we had to adapt our operations in real time. Fog can often roll in quickly, but this particular instance was substantial and prolonged, leading to an exceptional number of cancellations.
Editor: It’s interesting to hear how other factors might come into play. For instance, we heard that the concert by the band “For You,” featuring Ed Westwick, had to be postponed due to these weather conditions. How does that impact your airport specifically?
Marit: Yes, anytime there’s a major disruption, it can ripple through various sectors, including entertainment and travel. When concerts or events are postponed, it can lead to a backlog of passengers who also have accommodation and transportation plans. We work closely with local partners to help manage these situations as best as we can.
Editor: That’s a great point. One passenger, Maria Solvang, expressed her frustration that she was rebooked multiple times only to eventually have to wait until the following day to travel. How does the airport handle passenger distress during such chaotic situations?
Marit: I completely understand Maria’s frustration. It’s crucial for us to balance safety with the needs of our passengers. We aim to communicate as transparently and quickly as possible about flight statuses, and our staff is trained to assist passengers, whether that means coordinating accommodations or providing timely updates.
Editor: Communication is key, especially in crises. As we look forward, what can travelers expect on the following days regarding the ongoing weather conditions?
Marit: While we have resumed some flights, I would advise travelers to stay updated on their flight status through the airline’s official channels. There may still be some delays or cancellations, as weather can be unpredictable. Safety is our top priority, and we will do our utmost to manage this effectively.
Editor: Thank you, Marit, for sharing your insights and for the hard work you and your team do at the airport, especially during such unpredictable events. Any last advice for travelers navigating through these disruptions?
Marit: Stay patient and stay informed! Weather challenges can be frustrating, but remember that your safety and the safety of everyone is what matters most.
Editor: Wise words indeed. Thank you once again for joining us, Marit, and for shedding light on this pressing issue.
Marit: Thank you! It’s been a pleasure.
Editor: And thank you to our audience for tuning in. Stay safe, and we will keep you updated on travel conditions as they develop. Until next time!
