Essen/Berlin – On Friday, the Essen Museum Folkwang accepted the first-ever prize from the Berlin donor couple Tiemann, which was endowed with 50,000 euros. In the presence of the donors, museum director Peter Gorschlüter presented a group of works by the Berlin artist Armin Boehm (born 1972), which the museum purchased with the prize money.

The group of works consists of four pictures that are now being shown in the museum. The main work is Boehm’s large-format work “Monetocene” – a critical social allegory in the style of George Grosz. The oil painting with glued-in textile elements was created in 2017, but it anticipates the currently widespread feeling of numerous simultaneous crises, said Gorschlüter. At 50,000 euros, the prize is one of the most highly endowed foundations, even in international comparison.

The prize, which will in future be awarded annually by the foundation of the real estate entrepreneur Jürgen Tiemann and his wife Ingeborg, is aimed at museums and art institutions with their own contemporary collection and is intended for purchases of contemporary paintings.
