The Ukrainian army regained ground in Donbas in its arduous push towards the coast, while Russia hit the port of Odessa again with drones and missiles, in response to a recent attack on the Crimean bridge. According to Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar, her units achieved “certain successes” in two areas of the Donetsk region leading to the strategic ports of Mariupol and Berdiansk on the Azov Sea.

Russia on the attack

The Russians launched a new wave of drones and missiles this morning against the port of Odesa facing the Black Sea, where three people were injured in a hypermarket. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Moscow used fifteen Iranian-made Shahed drones and eight Kalibr cruise missiles in the three night attacks.

The falling fragments of the missiles in the historic center of the city damaged a student dormitory and a hypermarket, also affecting 113 homes, according to the mayor, Guennadi Trujanov. The missile strikes were carried out by a Russian military ship off the Black Sea coast of Crimea, as the drones took off from Russia’s southern Krasnodar region.

According to the Russian war report, Moscow destroyed several factories and warehouses of nautical drones used by Ukraine in “terrorist” attacks against the Crimean bridge and other targets in the Black Sea with naval emplacement missiles. Odessa paid the piper for the umpteenth attack carried out on Saturday by kyiv against the bridge linking mainland Russia with the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula.

Ukraine launched two S-200 missiles at Russia and Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky said the attack was a response to Russian war crimes. But both were shot down by Russian anti-aircraft batteries.

Russia, for its part, launched two S-300s and killed two civilians in the Zaporizhia region. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed today that it had destroyed a Spanish-made Alakran self-propelled mortar during an attack on the Ukrainian region of Kherson, in the south of the country. “On the Kherson front, the enemy suffered up to 30 casualties in the last three days as a result of Russian fire, in addition to three cars and an Alakran self-propelled mortar, made in Spain,” Russian Defense spokesman Igor Konashenkov said.

Fighting on several fronts

Ukrainian units have advanced to the towns of Staromayorskoe and Urozhainoe near the administrative border of the southern Zaporizhia region, where the Russians would have had to retreat. In response, pro-Russian bloggers point out that Russian troops still control southern Urozhainoe where Moscow has a fortified district on the banks of the Mokrie Yali river.

The Russian representative in Zaporizhia, Vladimir Rogov, confirmed the Ukrainian incursion, while the Ukrainian army stressed that enemy attempts to retake positions failed. According to the New York Times newspaper, the Ukrainians would have advanced 20 kilometers in the direction of Melitópol, the main city in southern Zaporizhia. In case of taking Urozhainoe, the Ukrainian troops would be only 80 kilometers from the coast, from where they could already hit the enemy positions with long-range artillery. They would also continue to make progress on the southern flank of the Bakhmut stronghold in Donetsk, where the Ukrainians liberated 3 square kilometers in the past week.
