London.

The US rock band Foo Fighters commemorated their drummer Taylor Hakwins, who died in March, with an emotional and spectacular concert in London. The group around frontman Dave Grohl (53) performed on Saturday together with numerous prominent musical guests at Wembley Stadium to commemorate the musician. The surprise guest was ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney.

During the almost six-hour concert, there were ex-Oasis singer Liam Gallagher, former Police drummer Stewart Copeland, Wolfgang van Halen, the Pretenders, the James Gang, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson from the Canadian cult band Rush, Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers and star producer Mark Ronson on stage. Most of the musicians were artists that Hawkins counted among his role models and with whom he was friends.

Loud cheers for Paul McCartney

AC/DC singer Brian Johnson set the mood at Wembley with “Back In Black” and “Let There Be Rock” and was joined by Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich. The Queen musicians Brian May and Roger Taylor played, among other things, the classic “Somebody To Love”, in which the British ESC second Sam Ryder sang. Paul McCartney took the stage towards the end of the show to loud cheers. Sir Paul performed “Oh! Darling” with Pretenders frontwoman Hynde and the Beatles song “Helter Skelter”.

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, who was close friends with Hawkins, fought back tears several times throughout the evening. Emotional highlight of the evening: Hawkins’ 16-year-old son Shane played the drums on the song “My Hero”.

Continued in Los Angeles

A second Taylor Hawkins tribute concert will take place in Los Angeles on September 27th. Miley Cyrus, Kiss’ Gene Simmons, Alanis Morissette and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith are expected to join the many stars attending London. The proceeds from the concerts benefit the Music Support and Musicares foundations.

Taylor Hawkins was found dead in a hotel room in Colombia’s capital Bogotá on March 25 while on tour. The cause of death was not disclosed. However, a forensic examination found various substances in Hawkins’ body, including marijuana, antidepressants, benzodiazepines and opioids. (dpa)
