The decline has begun. Light, slow and not necessarily noticeable for consumers’ wallets. But at the beginning of July, the price of our basket of 31 everyday products fell by 1.6% compared to the previous month, from 122.71 euros to 120.75 euros.

This small drop reflects the discreet slowdown in food inflation recorded by INSEE over the past two months — with an estimated increase of +13.6% over one year in June after +14.3% in May —, and which could well continue all summer. Especially since the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, promised in early June that hundreds of food products would see their prices drop “in waves” between July, August and September, under a commitment made to Bercy. by 45 major food manufacturers.

Is this the case for the products in our basket? Not really at the moment. As we explained in recent days, very few manufacturers have already played the game. Even if our selection is not exhaustive, the prices of the products of the major groups in our panel have, for the most part, not changed. . Only compotes in gourds lost 3 cents and unsalted butter 4 cents.

A more expensive addition of 20.8% compared to February 2022

For others, the labels have even been revised upwards. This is particularly the case for ham (+ 1.4%), organic eggs (+ 7.5%) and Nutella (+ 7.2%). As for cereals with organic honey, their price fell in July, but after a jump in June linked to the fact that the brand only offered 620 g packets instead of 320 g. However, the July price (4.09 euros) is still higher than in February 2022, when we first recorded the price, when it sold for 3.69 euros.

The real drops in July actually come mainly from fresh produce, including the prices of seasonal fruits and vegetables which are plummeting: -50% for organic round vine tomatoes and -15% for organic kiwis. As for private label products (grated Emmental, pasta, hazelnut potatoes), their price has not changed since February 2023.

Can we therefore rejoice in a drop, finally, in the food bill? Yes and no. Because since the start of inflation, in February 2022, the prices of fresh or processed products have always been near peaks on the shelves. At the time, to buy the 31 products listed in our basket, you had to pay less than 100 euros (99.98 euros). In July, despite the very slight drop, the basket still costs 20.8% more than a year and a half ago.
