According to the UN World Food Program (WFP), Colombia has managed to reduce food insecurity from 30% to 25% in 2023.

However, despite this progress, a worrying figure still persists: 13 million people in the country still suffer from hunger.

The report presented by the WFP reveals that, despite improvements in some economic indicators such as the reduction in the inflation and unemployment rate, as well as the decrease in monetary poverty, A significant part of the Colombian population continues to face difficulties in accessing adequate food.

The study, based on surveys carried out in 29 departments and 133 municipalities, highlights that 51% of Colombian households They are in a “marginal food security situation,” meaning they are at risk of falling into food insecurity due to factors such as the effects of the El Niño phenomenon or the economic slowdown.

In addition, the persistent gap between rural and urban areas is highlighted, where food insecurity rates reach 31% in rural areas. In particular, the department of La Guajira, in the north of the country, continues to be one of the most affected regions, with an alarming figure close to 60%.

Although improvements have been observed since 2022, the WFP report highlights the high vulnerability of Colombian households, which continue to resort to survival strategies related to food and livelihoods.
